Meet Our Superintendent
Pat Murphy, Ed.D., Superintendent
An educator since 1988, Dr. Murphy comes to Berkeley County following 10 years experience as superintendent of Arlington Public Schools, in Virginia. With APS, Dr. Murphy implemented two, six-year Strategic Plans to achieve significant gains in graduation rates, addressing opportunity and achievement gaps and meeting the needs of the whole child. He is also responsible for development of the Aspire to Excellence Academic Planning Initiative Pre-K - 16 to engage families in early conversations to enroll students in academically rigorous courses.
Prior to his role in Arlington, Dr. Murphy served Fairfax County Public Schools in a variety of instructional leadership positions. In his final four years as assistant superintendent for accountability, he was responsible for testing, research and evaluation, and division- and school-based strategic planning.
In 2015, the Virginia Association of School Superintendents selected Dr. Murphy as its Virginia Superintendent of the Year and he was a finalist for the 2015 National Superintendent of the Year by the School Superintendents Association.
Under his leadership, APS earned the Medallion of Excellence in June 2014 from Virginia’s U.S. Senate Productivity Award program based on Baldrige criteria and Arlington’s priority for continuous improvement.
Dr. Murphy's educational background includes a master’s and doctorate degree in educational administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a bachelor degree in physical education from James Madison University.

District News: Superintendent
The Berkeley County Board of Education named Dr. Patrick K. Murphy superintendent of Berkeley County Schools effective September 1. Dr. Murphy will succeed Interim Superintendent Chuck Hatfield. Dr. Murphy comes to Berkeley County Schools with ten-year's experience as the superintendent of Arlington Public Schools, in Virginia.
