West Virginia Promise Scholarship
Graduating high school with a 3.0 GPA or better? Cash in on all your hard work with the Promise Scholarship – and get up to $5,000 every year to pursue college in West Virginia. The Promise Scholarship is a merit-based financial aid program for West Virginia high school graduates planning to attend a public or independent two- or four-year colleges in West Virginia.

Students must submit an application and FAFSA by March 1 during their senior year, even if they have not met all requirements by March 1.
Test Score Requirements Updated for Class of 2022 & 2023:
Must complete high school graduation requirements at a West Virginia public or private high school. Must complete at least half of credits required for high school graduation through attendance at a public or private high school in the state of West Virginia. Must achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 in core courses AND overall coursework.
MINIMUM TEST SCORE REQUIREMENTS:
- ACT score requirement: 22 composite score with a minimum of 20 in English, Mathematics, Science, and Reading.
- SAT score requirement: Total score of 1100 with a minimum of 520 in Math and 530 in Evidence Based Reading and Writing. The SAT writing portion is not included in the calculation of the composite score.
Last test dates to qualify for the Promise Scholarship:
- ACT - July 2023
- SAT - June 2023
A student and his/her parents/guardians must have resided in West Virginia continuously for twelve consecutive months preceding the Proimse Scholarship deadline, unless a member of the armed services or a military dependent as outlined in the the Promise Scholarship Program Rule.
The Promise Scholarship Application opens on www.collegeforwv.com/programs/promise-scholarship/. The deadline to apply is March 1 of a student's 12th Grade Year.
The new FAFSA will be available on studentaid.gov.

Students must apply by March 1, even if they have not yet met all requirements. In order to be considered for the Promise Scholarship, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must also be completed on studentaid.gov by March 1.
Initial award letters are emailed/texted to Promise Scholars.
