Can I eat lunch with my child?

If you would like to eat lunch with your child, please send a note or call the school by 9:30 if you will be eating a school meal from the cafeteria.  Adult meals are $4.  You may also choose to pack or bring lunch. Anyone who comes to eat lunch with your student must be listed on their emergency card.

Please note:  At the beginning of the school year, we do not host parents for lunch so the children can learn and practice our lunchroom procedures.  Please look for the “green light” on the HES newsletter to find out when we will begin hosting parents for lunch (usually October 1st).

How do I view the menu?

A monthly newsletter containing the menu will be sent home with each student.

You can view the menus for Breakfast, Grab & Go Breakfast & Lunch via the link on the Berkeley County Schools website.  You may also download the Nutrislice app for menus and nutritional information.

How do I apply for Free or Reduced Meals?

o   You can apply for free or reduced meals online via the link on the BCS website or by completing a Free/Reduced Meal Application.  Applications are available in the school office or the Nutrition Department at 401 S. Queen Street, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

o   Applications are sent home at the beginning of each school year, but you may apply at any time.  You may also reapply at any time during the school year.  If your income changes or the number of people living in your household changes, you may qualify for free or reduced meals.

o   You only need to complete one application per household.  Include ALL students living in your home on the same form, no matter what grade they are in.  For example, if you have an elementary student and a middle school student, put both students on one form.  A new form must be completed at the beginning of each school year.

Will I get a bill and how do I pay my child’s lunch bill?

Bills are mailed on a monthly basis and you may mail your payment or you may pay your bill online via schoolcafe.com.

You may also send money daily with your child, make payments in the school office or at the Nutrition Department.

If you have questions about your bill, please contact the office or you may contact the Nutrition Department at

    (304) 267-3510 ext. 13257.  The Nutrition Department is located at 401 S. Queen Street, Martinsburg

Can I bring in cupcakes for the class on my child’s birthday?

Please check with your child’s teacher to make sure that there are no food allergies in the classroom.  Food must be store bought only.

IDENTIMETRICS: All Berkeley County schools use identiMetrics scanning as part of an effort to provide security for your child’s cafeteria account, to eliminate clerical errors, and to provide an easy, fast way for students to identify themselves in the meal line. Although the software scans the finger, it does not store a copy of the fingerprint. Instead, it creates a template of finger points and characteristics. The data file is stored in the school’s database, and is treated with the same high security as all student records, and is never delivered to any other agency. If you do not wish to have your child participate, please make that request in writing to your child’s school annually. HES also uses this technology in the library when students check out books.
