• Hedgesville Elementary Nurses:

Mrs. Heidi Crawford, RN, BSN, CSN (HES & Tomahawk Intermediate School)

Mrs. Penny Creel, RN, BSN, CSN (HES & Hedgesville Middle School)

Our caring & professional nurses are here to make sure our school is a healthy and safe environment.  Our nurses are each responsible for two schools, so there are some periods of time when a nurse is not in the building.

If your child has a medical condition or allergy, please notify the nurse immediately.

What do I do if my child needs to take medication or has a food allergy?

Any medication, prescription or non-prescription (Tylenol, hydrocortisone cream, cough drops, etc.) requires an Administration of Medication Form to be completed and signed by a physician.

Please note that a new form is required at the beginning of each school year.

If you have a completed medication form, please hand deliver the medication to the nurse or the office.

Please do not send any medication to school with your child.

If your child has a food allergy, please see the school nurse or office staff to complete the necessary paperwork so the appropriate accommodations can be made.

When can my child return to school after illness?

o   Fever free for the past 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications such as Tylenol. A fever is defined as a temperature ≥ 100.5º F.

o   No vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours.

o   After at least 24 hours of antibiotic therapy for bacterial illnesses such as strep throat, pneumonia, etc.

o   Cold symptoms that are mild enough so as not to interfere with your child’s ability to participate in the activity of a normal school day or infect other students. Please remember that cold and cough medicines, including cough drops cannot be given to students by school staff without a doctor’s order.

o   If your child was sent home with a rash, they may return when the rash is resolved or with a doctor’s note stating they are not contagious.

Please make sure your emergency contact information in the office is up to date so that if your child is sick or has an emergency, we can contact you.

    Attendance Notes:

Being at school on time and every day possible helps your child succeed in school!  If your child is absent, please send a note stating the reason for the absence when they return.

o   Excused absences include:  illness, death in the family, verified dental or physician appointment, verified court appearance, or school approved activity.

o   If your child will be absent due to a vacation, please complete a Leave of Educational Value Form prior to your child’s absence from school.

o   Excused parent notes are limited to 10 per school year.  Written notice will be served to parents of any student having 3 total unexcused absences.  After 5 unexcused absences, a conference will be required.  Any student having more than 10 or more unexcused absences will result in a legal complaint filed against the parent or guardian.

You can contact the school nurse by calling the school at (304) 754-3341 or by email.
