Welcome to Ms. Emch's teacher webpage! I just moved to Martinsburg August 15 and am teaching Earth and Space Science. Just like all incoming freshmen, I am brand new to this school, but I'm also very excited to embrace and experience such a wonderful opportunitiy to teach at Spring Mills High School!
As a lifelong learner and somewhat book smart person, I utilize different approaches to teaching that places a heavy emphasis on student application and skill builidng. For example, students do not define terms word- by- word by using the glossary, but instead actively read about that particular term while identifying key parts, producing a concise but thorough defintion. In the real world, most individuals do not explain what a word or concept means by reciting the meaning from webster's dictionary, but used a condensed simple version to explain it. Students seem to comprehend and understand concepts or skills when they are actively learning it.
Willilam Petersen quote embraces my classroom philosophy, “A smart person is not one that knows the answers, but one who knows where to find them...”. My goal for students is to not remember EVERY single concept or term from Earth and Space Science, but for students to develop skills that will enable them to succeed in whatever future endeaver they choose.
