English Honors & AP Students: Enjoy Your Summer and Get Lost in a Good Book!
To prepare you for experiences in the upper-level course you have elected to take, this summer you will do some reading. But here’s the great news: your ONLY assignment (for now) is to read!
In September 2022 acclaimed author, Barbara Kingsolver, will be the Shepherd University Appalachian Heritage Writer in Residence. In anticipation of this visit, all SMHS incoming English Honors and AP students will be reading a Kingsolver text this summer or during the first weeks of school this fall for a school-wide collaborative author study on Ms. Kingsolver.
In addition to Kingsolver, upper-level English classes may be asked to read one or two additional texts. See your individual course summer reading description below for complete description of summer reading and/or tasks.
How Do I Obtain My Summer Reading Assignments?
You are highly encouraged to purchase your own texts for summer reading so that you can highlight and annotate your texts as you read. If you are unable to obtain the summer reading texts on your own, see your 2022-2023 English teacher to check out a school copy for the summer that must be returned in the fall. Notes and annotations cannot be made directly in school issued texts.

As you read, please make note of chapters that particularly stand out to you. You will be choosing one to use for a project when school starts.
