History

Musselman Middle School is located in Bunker Hill in southern Berkeley County in the beautiful Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, a part of the historic Shenandoah Valley.  Historic sites located in Bunker Hill near MMS are the Morgan Cabin and the Bunker Hill Flour Mill.

The Morgan Cabin

In 1726, Morgan Morgan, II moved from Delaware and founded the first permanent English settlement of record in West Virginia on Mill Creek near the present-day Bunker Hill in Berkeley County. The state of West Virginia erected a monument in Bunker Hill commemorating the event, and placed a marker at Morgan's grave, which is located in a cemetery near the park.  The Morgan Cabin was rebuilt with part of the original logs during the 1976 bicentennial celebration.

The Bunker Hill Flour Mill

The Bunker Hill Flour Mill is one of the first mill sites in Berkeley County and dates back to 1735.

Berkeley County

Bunker Hill is located in Berkeley County, West Virginia.  John Lederer, a German physician and explorer was the first Englishman to set foot in the county in 1670. At that time, the county was occupied primarily by Tuscarora Indians.  Norborne Berkeley, (the Baron de Botetourt) who served as the colonial governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770, is believed by most historians to be the namesake of Berkeley County, which was created in 1772 and consists of some 325 square miles. Col. Thomas Bryan Martin is the man honored at Martinsburg, the Berkeley County seat. The Virginia Assembly chartered the city in 1778. Martin was the nephew of England's Lord Fairfax.  Gen. Adam Stephen, a Revolutionary soldier, who named Martinsburg for his friend, Col. Martin, first laid out the city. General Stephen was also the first sheriff of Berkeley County. 

Today

Berkeley County is located approximately 75 air miles northwest of Washington, D.C. in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. The population of the county is approximately 120,000 and continues to grow as many new businesses establish facilities here. Our county is also a "bedroom community" for many people who work in the metropolitan Washington/Baltimore area.

Musselman Middle School

Musselman Middle School is located in Bunker Hill in southern Berkeley County in the beautiful Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia.   Located in the historic Shenandoah Valley near the cabin of West Virginia's first settler, Morgan Morgan, MMS is approximately 80 miles from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland.  Musselman Middle serves approximately 700 students in grades 6 through 8 and employs approximately 90 faculty and staff members.  The school population passes  through Mill Creek Intermediate . Once our students have completed their middle school education, they move on to Musselman High School.

The original Musselman Middle School first opened its doors in August 1987.  This building and site, now the location of Mill Creek Intermediate School, is located across the street from our present location.  In August 1999, students first entered our modern, well-equipped, two-story brick structure which is situated on the site that once was the location of Musselman High School.
