Berkeley County Schools & the WVSSAC
Berkeley County Schools will follow and adhere to the rules and regulations set forth and governed by the West Virginia Secondary Schools Athletics Commission. These rules can be found by accessing the Rules and Regulations Handbook on the WVSSAC website.
Academics & Athletics
Student athletes wanting to participate in athletics at the secondary level must maintain a 2.0 grade point average. A 2.0 average is defined as a grade-point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better on a scale where an A is given the value of 4 points, a B is given the value of 3 points, a C is given the value of 2 points, a D is given the value of 1 point, and an F is given the value of 0 points. Attendance & Athletics
Athletes must be in attendance in school a FULL DAY during a day of any athletic event or contest in which they may be involved, unless it is the judgment of the Principal or Athletic Director and/or prior arrangements are made that they are excused. It should be noted that this is to include all practice sessions. Also, tardiness to homeroom or classes will constitute attendance. Athletes must be in school the day after the contest, unless previously arranged with the principal. All attendance questions regarding athletics is up to the discretion of the building principal.
Discipline & Athletics
Student athletes are held to the same discipline standards as found in West Virginia Policy 4373. Individual athletic teams may have specific rules within their programs. This is to be communicated by the coach to the student athlete and parent prior to the beginning of the season.
Eligibility
All eligibility requirements and decisions are governed by the WVSSAC. Any questions can be directed to your principal or athletic director.
Physicals/FamilyID/Participation Fee
All student athletes wishing to participate in interscholastic athletics must have a completed physical examination form on file with the school. This physical must be completed by a medical professional yearly and is good from May 1st through the following year. All student athletes and parents must have a Family Id account for each sport the student athlete is participating in. All student athletes are required to pay a $20.00 athletic fee per sport. If a student cannot afford this fee, school officials shall develop options that will allow the student to participate.
Letter Requirements
The coach shall recommend the athletes who have met the requirements for a letter. These recommendations are to be approved by the athletic director. If any problems arise, a committee composed of the Coach, Principal and Athletic Director shall make the final decision.
Requirements – Completion of season and:
Football, Basketball, and Soccer: 50% of quarters
Cross Country, Golf, and Wrestling: 75% of meets
Volleyball and Tennis: 75% of matches
Baseball and SoftballL 50% of innings
Track Point System
Swimming: 75% of meets
Cheerleaders Varsity Squad
Managers/Stats: 2 yrs. on Varsity Squad
Special consideration for awarding letters will be given for extended participation, injuries, etc. Athletic awards will be presented at appropriate programs to honor student-athletes, these may include: Letters and/or pins with certificates, Participation certificates, Senior certificates, Plaques for individual sport honors, Trophies for outstanding and scholastic athlete, team awards for league championships and state playoffs

Inclement Weather
Berkeley County Schools will act with the utmost caution regarding situations of inclement weather. If school is cancelled due to weather, all extra-curricular activities will also be cancelled. The superintendent can modify this decision after reviewing the weather.
Postponing Contests
If a game must be postponed, the principal, athletic director, and coach will notify all stakeholders in a timely fashion. They will work together with the competing school to reschedule the game at the earliest convenience.
