Goal 1: Academic Excellence

Students will perform at or above level or make more than one year's growth in Reading and Mathematics. BCS will eliminate opportunity gaps and recover learning through support school-wide systems.

SMART Goal

By June 2026, SMMS will increase student achievement in reading and mathematics by ensuring that 100% of students in grades 6–8 demonstrate at least 1.5 years of academic growth as measured by iReady formative assessments, and by increasing the percentage of students meeting grade-level standards in math to 30.08%, as measured by the West Virginia General Summative Assessment.

Building on the 2022–2023 baseline data, SMMS will implement supportive, school-wide systems to eliminate opportunity gaps and accelerate learning recovery, with incremental district targets leading to at least 50% of students performing on grade level in reading and mathematics by June 2026.

Goal 2: Health and Well-Being

All Berkeley County Schools will create and maintain safe learning environments that promote excellent academic achievement. BCS will nurture all students’ intellectual, physical, mental, and social-emotional growth with specific emphasis on recovering from complex trauma.

SMART Goal

SMMS will create and maintain safe learning environments and promote excellent academic achievement. SMMS will nurture all students' intellectual, physical, mental, and social-emotional growth with a specific emphasis on recovering from complex trauma in healthy, safe, and supportive learning environments. During the 2025-2026 school year, the chronic absenteeism rate will improve by 2% as evidenced by Chronic Absence reports from ZoomWVe. During the 2025-2026 school year, behavior incidents that resulted in more than 10 days of out of school suspension will be decreased by 10%.

Implement a variety of programs, initiatives, and measures that reward students for attending school and hold students accountable when they are not in school.

Action Steps

  1. Attendance Rewards - To continue with our attendance reward program, but to increase the number of students who can earn a reward. Through the efforts of our administrative team, we have enough donated rewards to give all students who have perfect attendance for a particular month a small prize. The will be recognized on a bulletin board as well.

  2. Walkthroughs - While the overall plan is for administration to increase the total number of walkthroughs to 2 per month, administration will be conducting 1 walkthrough per week for teachers with 2 or fewer years' experience. Administration will be providing support with classroom management and instruction. During these walkthroughs, staff will look for evidence of the HIIPs.

  3. Bullying Prevention Initiatives- lessons each month as well as strategies for prosocial behaviors during Wellness Wednesday each week.

Efficient and effective operations will allow BCS to maintain its focus on student learning.  BCS will strengthen and improve system-wide operations through federal, state and local financial resources to meet the needs of the district’s growing and changing community.

SMMS will be implementing a number of measures designed to retain our staff. These measures will focus on improving culture and climate as well as providing resources and training to improve student achievement and learning.

Action Steps

  1. Renaissance -SMMS teachers will implement components of the Renaissance program. A Renaissance committee was formed at the end of the school year, and our committee will be meeting in July to discuss steps for integrating Renaissance into our current school culture and climate.

  2. School Administration is working to update the Patriot Press, our online staffulty resource and our Year at-a-Glance Calendar for the 2025-2026 school year. Both of those resources are designed to help support our teachers as the navigate the daily challenges of teaching. Both documents wil

  3. Staff will have more buy in on professional development opportunities for the school. The school leadership team, which meets monthly, has been tasked with providing guidance and support on professional development as well.

  4. Intellispark - All stakeholder who are involved in the decision making and supportive measures will utilize Intellispark as a communication and monitoring tool.
