School Strategic Plan & SMART Goals

Goal 1: Academic Excellence

Students will perform at or above level or make more than one year's growth in Reading and Mathematics. BCS will eliminate opportunity gaps and recover learning through support school-wide systems.

SMART Goal

During the 2025 - 2026 school year, all students will make at least one year's level worth of growth, or score proficient, as measured by the Spring iReady Reading & Math Diagnostic Assessments.

Strategy 1

All teachers will adhere to the WVCCRS for their grade-level, BCS curriculum maps, and county-approved curriculum, to ensure there is fidelity to core instruction.

Strategy 2

All 3-5 teachers will provide small group instruction through guided groups. Their lessons will focus on the skill deficiencies for each student as they will provide them with explicit instruction for each subject. Groups will change based on achievement on both formative and summative assessments.

Goal 2: Health and Well-Being

All Berkeley County Schools will create and maintain safe learning environments that promote excellent academic achievement. BCS will nurture all students’ intellectual, physical, mental, and social-emotional growth with specific emphasis on recovering from complex trauma.

SMART Goal

By June 2026, the chronic absence rate at Tomahawk Intermediate will be at or below 17% and discipline referrals will decrease by 10%.

Strategy 1

Implementation of school environment initiatives - positive relationship building, clear expectations, school-wide rules, vision, and mission, expected behaviors modeled by adults, weekly lessons through the BCS anti-bullying program.

Goal 3: Operational Excellence

Efficient and effective operations will allow BCS to maintain its focus on student learning.  BCS will strengthen and improve system-wide operations through federal, state and local financial resources to meet the needs of the district’s growing and changing community.

SMART Goal

By June 2026, student discipline referrals will decrease by 10%.
