Volunteers & Chaperones

Berkeley County Schools is grateful for the time and talent our families and community members share with students. To ensure a safe and supportive environment, all volunteers and chaperones are required to complete training and a background check before assisting in classrooms, on field trips, or at school events.

This page will guide you step-by-step through the process so you’ll know exactly what to do—and when—before you begin volunteering.

Quick Start: Do These Four Steps in Order

  1. Complete the Volunteer Training PowerPoint (required)

  2. Watch the WVDE Meghan’s Law training (required)

  3. Pass the BCS Volunteer Quiz (required)

  4. Complete the background check (required for Level I volunteers only; paid by volunteer)

You'll receive a background check link by email after your quiz is recorded.

Step 1: Volunteer Training PowerPoint (Required for All Volunteers)

Review the PowerPoint presentation that covers BCS expectations, roles, and student safety. Be sure to view all slides.

What you’ll learn:

  • Volunteer responsibilities and boundaries

  • Student privacy and safety expectations

  • Who to contact with concerns

When finished: proceed to Step 2.

An accessible version of this training is available below.

Step 2: WVDE Meghan's Law Training (Required for All Volunteers)

Watch the state-required Meghan’s Law training video to learn how to recognize, prevent, and report concerns. This training is required for all volunteers.

When finished: proceed to Step 3 to confirm completion.

Step 3: BCS Volunteer Quiz (Required for All Volunteers)

Take the short quiz to confirm you’ve completed the PowerPoint and the Meghan’s Law training.

What to expect:

  • ~5–10 minutes to complete

  • You may retake if needed

  • Use your full legal name so we can match your record

When finished: watch for an email with your background-check link (Step 4).

Step 4: Background Check (Required for Level I Volunteers Only; Paid by Volunteer)

All volunteers must pass a background check before helping in classrooms, on field trips, or at events.

How it works:

  • You’ll receive an email with your Secure Volunteer background-check link once your quiz is logged

  • Follow the instructions to submit your information and payment

  • You’ll be notified of your status when complete

Reminder: The background check fee is paid by the volunteer.
